Performance

The undergraduate program of Performance was set up in 2003 when Tongji University, Shanghai Film Group and Shanghai Film Investment jointly established the former Film College. The program has started student enrollment since 2004 and set up the study direction of Film & Television Performance since 2005. In 2012, the Performance program was officially merged into the College of Arts and Media. Based on the comprehensive education environment in Tongji University, the study direction of Film & Television Performance provides professional performance training on realistic drama and film by focusing on both theory and practice training and combining classroom teaching and professional performance practice. Most graduates of the program participate in professional film and television performance organizations or other related cultural and artistic groups at home and abroad, engaging in professional film, television and drama performances or other related cultural and artistic work.

Practicing the core values of socialism, the undergraduate talents from our Performance program should be advanced art professionals who are patriotic, have lofty artistic career aspirations, high-level artistic professional ethics, extensive humanistic qualities, professional drama and film performance knowledge, strong performance and teamwork skills, and thus become reliable successors and qualified builders of socialistic culture and arts undertakings when they make sustainable development and contribution in related fields. Performance graduates may work in the fields of drama, film and television performance, performing arts education, culture and art management or cultural and art cross-border work. In terms of particular positions, they would be mainly working as film and television performers, drama performers, musical drama performers, advertising performers, film and television directors, screenwriters, performing arts educators, engaged in administrative, marketing, cultural and artistic brokerage for cultural and artistic institutions, or start up their own businesses in cultural and artistic fields.


Music Performance

The Music Performance program was agreed to set up by Tongji University's Teaching Steering Committee at the end of 2004 and began enrolling students in 2005. Due to the policy of “thick foundation, strong ability, broad vision and heavy practice”, we attach great importance to high-quality teaching for professional courses. Therefore, we have fully integrated the resources of the campus, Shanghai and surrounding areas to build a strong and professional teaching team which is composed of many well-known music educators, performers and singers, with senior professionals from Shanghai music industry as the core. In 2012, the College of Arts and Media of Tongji University was established through the integration of former College of Communication and Arts (founded in 2001), College of Film (founded in 2003) and Department of Music. Focusing on all media and performing arts, the College is committed to cultivating social pillars and professional elites in artistic performance and media with new ideas, new visions and new skills. Currently, the Music Performance program provides study directions in Singing, Piano and Orchestral Music Performance.

Graduates from the program are those who have systematically mastered the theories and skills of music performance disciplines and as professional elites and social pillars, are competent to work in professional art organizations, art academies, or engaged in music performance, teaching and research activities in publicity and culture-related positions, achieving sustainable development in related fields.


Animation

The Animation program was founded in 2002 and selected as a “Featured Specialty” by the Ministry of Education in 2007. For more than ten years, hundreds of outstanding graduates have been trained and worked in various industries such as animation, games, film and television, and education. At present, the program has more than ten dedicated teachers whose academic backgrounds include art, design, science and engineering, etc. The program provides three study directions: 2D Animation, 3D Animation and Film & Television Special Effects, and Interactive Art. With an emphasis on interdisciplinary teaching and attaching importance to both traditional animation and digital media, the program has advanced teaching equipments in place to fully meet the learning, research and creative needs of students during their school days, such as first-class classrooms and studios for painting, original animation, animation, photography, virtual broadcasting, digital audio, as well as labs for electronic media, computer animation and visual effects, motion capture, non-planar imaging, information visualization, user experience, etc.
【Training Goal】The program aims to cultivate the socialism builders and successors with all-around development of moral, intellectual, physical, aesthetics and labour education and adheres to the philosophy of “developing the digital media art of animation and related fields by using digital technology and relying on leading disciplines of Tongji University”. Since its inception, the program has paid great attention to the integration of traditional art and modern technology, ensuring that students can be prepared with “profound artistic skills, rich creative experience and leading technical abilities” when they graduate, and become future social pillars and professional elites with the comprehensive traits of "general knowledge, professional quality, innovative thinking, practical ability, global vision and social responsibility". Animation graduates enjoy broad career prospects. They may work in film and television animation companies, game companies, internet companies, advertising companies, software companies, media companies, or media, design and publicity positions of other enterprises and institutions. They are qualified for pre-works such as scriptwriters, directors and conceptual designers, and they can also work in positions like digital animation production, interactive design and game development. Those with entrepreneurial and innovative capabilities can also become successful business owners.


Radio & Television Director

The Radio & Television Director program was originally established in 2000 by the College of Humanities, with a focus on radio and television program planning, production and theoretical research. In 2002, it was merged into the College of Arts and Media. At present, it has become a radio and television director program with Tongji University’s characteristics, that is, a program based on the creation of radio and television programs, focusing on the creation and distribution of emerging electronic media images, combining art and communication studies, paying attention to the combination of new theories and new skills with a broad international vision.

In order to meet the development needs of the radio, television and new media industries in the all-media era, this program cultivates talents with international perspectives, profound theoretical literacy and solid professional skills. We pay special attention to the improvement of students’ professional literacy and practical abilities in digital media marketing, planning, writing, editing, filming and theoretical research and actively develop industry-university-research cooperation with mainstream media and influential emerging media. We have signed contracts with a number of domestic mainstream media to establish practical teaching bases to jointly train and equip students with modern concepts, social responsibility, organizational management and other skills. Graduates will be competent for directing positions of radio, television, new media and program production companies and further become a professional elite and social pillar of sustainable development in related fields.

Radio & Television

The program was founded in 2002, formerly known as Radio, Television & Journalism. In 2013, the Ministry of Education revised its discipline catalogue and changed the name of such program to Radio & Television. In 2017, the program has signed an authority-enterprise-university joint construction agreement with the Publicity Department of the CPC Shanghai Committee and Shanghai Media Group (SMG) to conduct extensive and in-depth cooperation in various fields such as talent training, converged media lab construction, selected courses development and practice teaching bases. At present, this program is aimed at emerging electronic media and its journalism and media niche field, and is committed to cultivating “all-media” talents with profound humanistic quality, active creative thinking, solid basic theoretical knowledge, outstanding practical ability and great global vision to adapt to the development of modern media industry.

The program aims to cultivate “all-media” talents who are socialistic core values practitioners and reliable socialism builders and successors with all-around development of morality, physical fitness, abilities, knowledge and aesthetics. In order to meet the development needs of the country's new electronic media industry in the future, graduates from the program should be prepared with profound journalism & communication theoretical knowledge, humanistic quality and artistic foundations. Professionally, it focuses on both journalism and media. On the one hand, it highlights the practical ability of news distribution, planning, interview, writing, etc. On the other hand, it emphasizes professional skills such as audio-visual editing, TV program planning and production. In terms of the training path, in addition to established courses, the program will also make efforts to diversify students' learning methods by making full use of the opportunities from the cooperation with SMG to actively expand the second and third classrooms, encouraging students to develop self-learning ability and turn themselves into life-long thinkers and learners. In general, graduates from the program should have global vision and professional ambition, social responsibility, teamwork awareness and professional ethics corresponding to journalism and media. They can be competent in radio, television and newspapers, online media and other related positions in news distribution, public relations, interview and writing, production, etc., becoming social pillars and professional elites with sustainable development capacities in related fields.


Advertising

The Advertising program was originally established in 1995 by the College of Economics and Management. In 2002, it was merged into the College of Communication and Arts (now the College of Arts and Media), and the students enrolled have been included into the main program of Journalism & Communication. In 2017, the Journalism & Communication discipline of Tongji University has signed an authority-enterprise-university joint construction agreement with the Publicity Department of the CPC Shanghai Committee and SMG to conduct extensive and in-depth cooperation in various fields such as talent training, converged media lab construction, selected courses development and practice teaching bases. At present, relying on relevant academic conditions within the College of Arts and Media, Advertising program is developing into a unique program featured with the trinity of “content, art and technology” which takes marketing communication, creative design and media technology as the core, meanwhile expands to multimedia advertising related to film & television, internet and so on.

They will be competent to work in advertising companies, media, enterprises and institutions, and hopefully become social pillars and professional elites with sustainable development capacities in related fields, given they can adapt to the rapid development and changes of the advertising industry in the new era based on their modern advertising communication awareness and quality, as well as their profound knowledge and skills in audio-visual advertising design and production.
