The  College of Arts and Media of Tongji University currently provides six  undergraduate programs in Radio & Television, Advertising, Radio  & Television Director, Animation, Performance and Music Performance,  as well as First-level Disciplines for Master's Degrees in Journalism  & Communication and Design, and Professional Master Degree in Art  Design (MFA). The Art & Design discipline from Tongji University, a  First-Class discipline in China, was ranked the global 18th in the 2018  QS world university rankings.
 
 
 
The College has teaching and research facilities on  both Siping Road and Jiading campuses. With a total construction area of  over 13,000 square meters, the Weixin Building of Jiading Campus  accommodates a new Media Experiment and Practice Teaching Center  providing public teaching platforms such as studio, virtual studio,  movie hall, animation lab, nonlinear editing lab, digital animation lab,  digital audio workstation, electronic media lab, art teaching center,  graphic imaging lab, media asset management system, physical media lab,  library art branch and new media art gallery, as well as dedicated  teaching and research platforms such as computer animation and visual  effects lab, interactive media lab, digital audio-visual lab and  non-planar imaging lab. There are also innovative bases such as the  College Student Image Studio. The College also has professional teaching  and research facilities for performance, dance and music at the Siping  Road Campus.
 
 
 
The College has 82 full-time faculty members,  including 17 professors, 25 associate professors and 40 lecturers. The  College also employs 10 distinguished professors from China and the  world. We have signed cooperation agreements with Bauhaus-Universität  Weimar of Germany, Columbia Chicago College in the USA, Audencia  Business School in France, University of Bologna in Italy, Taiwan Shih  Hsin University, Ghent University in Belgium and Staatliche Hochschule  fuer Musik Trossingen in Germany. In addition, we have developed student  exchange programs and teacher visiting and lecturing programs with  University of Westminster in the UK, Offenbach University of Art and  Design in Germany, City University of Hong Kong and Taiwan Kun Shan  University of Technology.
 
 
Focusing  on all media and performing arts, the College is committed to  cultivating social and professional elites in arts and media with new  ideas, new visions and new skills. The College is the Digital Art Talent  Cultivation Model Innovation Experimental Zone approved by the Ministry  of Education and the Education and Training Base for Shanghai Excellent  Journalism & Communication Talents, with its Animation program  selected as “Featured Specialty” by the Ministry of Education. Since  2018, Tongji University has become one of the universities in  authority-university collaboration with the CPC Shanghai Committee and  Shanghai Media Group (SMG).
 
 
RADIO AND TELEVISION
 
 
The  Radio & Television program focuses on the new mainstream media in  the media integration environment. Based on radio and television, the  program will develop towards new media such as network, interactive TV  and digital TV with artistic creativity and visual communication as the  core and creative communication as the guide, training  interdisciplinary, practical and international talents in a way that  integrates “content, art and technology” so that they can grow up into  outstanding media elites and omnimedia visual art culture communicators  who are widely qualified for news reporting, publicity planning, new  media communication, and big data processing positions in radio,  television, internet/mobile media, press and publication, party and  government authorities, enterprises and institutions, or other social  organizations. The program is one of the training bases for Shanghai  Excellent Journalism & Communication Talents and has received strong  supports from the University and Shanghai Municipal Education  Commission. In 2017, under the leadership of the Publicity Department of  the CPC Shanghai Committee, the Journalism & Communication  discipline of the program has signed an authority-university joint  construction agreement with SMG to conduct extensive and in-depth  exchanges and cooperation in various fields such as practice teaching  bases, converged media lab construction and journalists-into-classroom  program over the next three years. In wide cooperations with  institutions such as the University of Sheffield in the UK,  Bauhaus-Universität Weimar of Germany, Taiwan Shih Hsin University and  SMG, we have over 50% students participating in overseas exchanges.  Around 35% of the graduated students from the program chose to continue  their study abroad in the past three years. Other graduated students  have worked in traditional newspapers, radio stations, television  stations and advertising agencies, as well as in popular portal websites  such as Tencent and Sohu, or other emerging media organizations such as  mobile Internet news platforms and integrated marketing departments of  large enterprises. Many of them have grown into key players in news,  publishing, advertising, public relations, new media publicity or other  important positions in the communication industry, and some are also  emerging in the academic world.
 
 
 
ADVERTISING
 
The  Advertising program, the earliest J&C program provided by the  University, explores the emerging advertising forms in the new media  environment with brand marketing and communication, advertising planning  and creativity, media operation and management, and visual  communication design and production as the basic content to build a  talent training system focused on both new media and traditional  advertising. The aim is to cultivate professional elites and social  pillars with modern advertising communication awareness and capacities  and the knowledge and skills of audio-visual advertising design and  production, who can adapt to the rapid development and changes of the  advertising industry in the new era and achieve sustainable development  in related fields. Graduated students from this program are qualified  with advertising planning, design execution, creativity and marketing  capabilities and can be competent for advertising creative or  advertising planning positions in 4A advertising companies, marketing in  major enterprises and institutions, publicity or brand management  positions in media employers. In terms of international exchanges, we  have set up student exchange programs and teacher visiting and lecturing  programs with many overseas institutions. In addition to the College's  international and Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan exchange student programs,  students of this program can also apply for various university-level  international exchange student programs according to their own wishes.  The proportion of its undergraduate students going abroad for exchange  activities is close to 80%. We have extensively carried out global  exchanges and cooperation in teaching and research, with high  proportions in introducing foreign experts and sending abroad exchange  students compared with other domestic universities, supported by our  long-term exchanges and cooperation with advertising agency BBDO,  Hakuhodo Inc. and McCann. Our student works were widely watched by the  media at the Milan World Expo and the exhibition in Baden-Württemberg,  Germany. Graduated students are often employed by major 4A advertising  companies in Shanghai (e.g. BBDO, Ogilvy and McCann), Xinhua News  Agency, media planning companies, internet marketing companies, game  companies, SMG, new media design companies, and media communication  departments of the top 500 enterprises such as Agricultural Bank of  China and SAIC.
 
 
 
 
ACTING MAJOR
 
Performance
 
The undergraduate program of Performance was set up in 2004 by the College.
 
Relying  on Shanghai's profound film and television culture and location  advantages, the study direction of Film and Television Performance  focuses on both professional knowledge learning and performance  practice. It pays attention to the cultivation of students' humanistic  and artistic capacities and comprehensive expression ability, and  actively carries out international cultural exchanges to broaden  students' international vision so that they can adapt to the needs of  the constantly changing modern film and television performance industry.  We have a strong professional faculty team composed of first-class  seniors who are active in domestic drama, film and television  performance and director industry. In addition to working for film and  television production companies or cultural and educational  institutions, a large number of graduated students are also engage in  professional film and television shooting, advertising filming, or  active in the professional drama stage.
 
 
MUSIC MAJOR
 
The  Music Performance program was set up in 2004, with study directions in  orchestral music (violin, viola, cello, double bass, flute, oboe,  clarinet, big pipe, horn), vocal (Bel Canto) and piano. Since its  establishment, the program has adhered to the philosophy of “thick  foundation, strong ability, heavy practice and broad vision”. By  highlighting the characteristics of “small but fine” school-running and  taking “Double First-Class” development as an opportunity, we have set  up chamber orchestra, orchestra and choir to reflect the teaching method  of combining instrumental ensemble, choral ensemble, instrumental  playing solo and singing solo based on quality resources from the  University’s cooperation with institutions in Germany. We have  established close relationships in international exchange and  cooperation, and formed a strong faculty team composed of a joint  teaching platform (full of Chinese and German music educators,  performers and singers), experts from Europe and the United States,  domestic artists and a group of outstanding young and middle-aged  teachers. Graduated students will mainly work for opera houses,  orchestras, schools, or continue their further studies in universities  at home and abroad.

Radio & Television Director
 
The  undergraduate program of Radio & Television Director was set up in  2000, making Tongji one of the earliest key universities in Shanghai to  provide undergraduate program in radio and television directing. With  strong professional faculty, reasonable academic background and age  structure, the program focuses on the teaching and research of film and  television content production in the emerging media era. According to  the current development trend of the film industry, it has three study  directions: documentary creation, drama creation and entertainment  creation. It is equipped with high-definition nonlinear editing room,  digital audio and video lab, digital animation and visual effects lab,  digital audio workstation, virtual studio, movie hall and other advanced  teaching facilities for digital HD video recording, broadcasting and  production. The program pays special attention to practical teaching and  international exchange to expand students' creative ability and global  vision. Every year, a large number of students are selected to study  abroad and exchanges with Hong Kong, Taiwan and other overseas  universities. At the same time, many outstanding works from our students  have won professional awards in important domestic and international  film and television competitions. We are dedicated to cultivating  well-received and high-level professionals in radio, film and television  directing with modern radio, film and television culture knowledge and  creative skills. Some graduated students may work for radio and  television media, film and television production companies, cultural  communication companies or publicity and cultural departments of  government, various enterprises and institutions, while some others may  choose to continue their studies in other well-known universities at  home and abroad.
 
 
 
ANIMATION MAJOR
 
It  is the earliest Animation undergraduate program among the key  universities in Shanghai, and is selected as a “Featured Specialty” by  the Ministry of Education. Closely following the rapid development of  new media in current era, we adhere to the talent cultivation principle  of integrating original, unique artistic style with cutting-edge  technology, and strive to cultivate compound talents with both solid  traditional artistic skills and strong digital animation and digital  media creation capabilities. We have an internationalized faculty team  with reasonable academic background, who can firmly grasp the frontiers  and development trends in animation and related fields. Supported by the  first-class teaching and research facilities cover teaching and  research needs from basic painting and modeling to digital animation,  digital audio, interactive media, virtual reality and augmented reality,  our teachers and students have been repeatedly awarded in various film  and television animation competitions at home and abroad. Every year, we  have students studying and visiting overseas universities such as  Columbia Chicago College in the USA, Bauhaus-Universität Weimar of  Germany, Offenbach University of Art and Design in Germany, Staatliche  Hochschule fuer Musik Trossingen in Germany, Hong Kong Baptist  University and Taiwan Shih Hsin University. With the rapid development  of the new media industry in China and around the world, graduated  students of the program enjoy promising employment prospects.
